Since sconces are so popular and so artistic, they come in a wide
variety of materials and design. Here are some of the basics.
Copper
Again copper is for the rustic/cowboy look. Copper can also be a high
end contemporary look. Copper will patina with age. It will turn a greenish
gold color with age. Many people like this look for outdoor sconces.
Ceramic
Ceramic sconces have become quite popular the last few years. They usually
come in the color white and are inexpensive to purchase. The ceramic medium
gives artists the opportunity to create many varied shapes with ceramic.
Popular ceramic shapes are sea shells, scallops, and circles.
Glass
Clear glass allows the most light through. Clear glass is popular for
it's clear clean look. Most sconces have a frosted glass to reduce eye
glare. With glass we recommend frosted for the interior and clear glass
for the exterior of the home.
Stone
A stone sconce is ideal for the garden. Stone sconces take you back in
time. You feel as if you are living in medieval times. You need a sizable
wall to make the stone garden sconce work for you.
Stucco
Do you want your outdoor sconce to blend in with your house? Some people
just buy an inexpensive sconce and have it stuccoed the same color as
the house. It blends in quite well.
Wood and Metal
Wood and metal go great together. Wood has an elegant look that can't
be duplicated with any other material. Metal mixed with wood gives you
a strong historic feel. Sometimes wood, metal, and stone can also be a
great combination.
Contemporary
Modern sconce lights appear shrunk in size. They are smaller. The preferred
modern shape is round or triangular; square and boxy are out for modern
looks. Some also have a cylindrical shape. Contemporary sconces usually
come in black or white, but they also come in a wide variety of materials,
colors, and styles. If it looks slightly out of the ordinary or modern
you are most likely looking at a contemporary sconce light.
